Nolan Sunnassee tests IDD for back pain

 Clinic in London.

Back pain affects millions of people and can really disrupt your life. I slipped two discs about ten years ago (L3/4, and L4/5) when I fell in the bathroom coming out of the bath.

In addition to the back pain caused from the slipped discs, I get other aches in my lower back and some discomfort in my hips, too.

Osteopathy and physiotherapy treatments have helped a lot but have never resolved the issues and only provided a temporary solution.

I’ve adjusted to the discomfort and changed my movements to accommodate, but I know this is not a long-term solution.

So, I was eager to trial IDD Therapy at Mayfair clinic in London, to see whether it would improve my back pain.

Back pain fully integrative approach

The Mayfair Clinic recently won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innovation 2020, which is no surprise as they take a really different and integrative approach to pain and discomfort. It’s a lot more comprehensive than other rehabilitation treatments I’ve tried.

Firstly, IDD is non-invasive, meaning you don’t have to strip down to your underwear to be assessed or treated. Secondly, the main focus is on the root cause of your back pain, not simply managing current symptoms.

After the initial consultation, I was immediately booked in for an upright X-ray at another clinic around the corner, which works in tandem with the Mayfair Clinic. This was to allow the osteopath to have as much information as possible about my back.

The X-ray highlights every tilt and angle of each joint and disc in your back, every curve of your spine, and how much it deviates from the norm. It was the most comprehensive testing and reporting I’ve ever undertaken.

Back pain alleviated by The Mayfair Method

What’s called the ‘Mayfair Method’ includes the following:

  • Targeted Percussive Vibration Therapy
  • Spinal Impulse Adjustment.
  • Laser Therapy.
  • And finally, IDD therapy.

The percussive vibration therapy delivers 3,600 percussive beats per minute and helps to improve circulation to tight and overworked muscles. The percussive vibration also stimulates the nerves in the spine, warming them up so the next stage of treatment is more effective.

The next stage is where a gun-type machine is applied along the spine. It senses where a disc needs to be adjusted, and sends a little ‘push’ down into that place. It’s more precise and a lot gentler than the hard manual manipulations offered by a lot of osteopaths.

The red laser light therapy is used to further reduce inflammation and warm up the muscles and surrounding area ready for IDD.

Finally, the IDD portion of the session is where you lay on a table, strapped into a machine that gently moves forward and back to decompress your spinal discs, elongating the spine. It works on all parts of the spine to reduce pain, including lower back and neck. It was an unusual sensation but completely pain free.

Gentle decompression for your back

One of the main benefits of this type of machine is that it uses a small proportion of your bodyweight to gently stretch the spine in cycles. The gentle pull and relax motion creates a pumping effect inside the discs, which allows for nutrients and hydration to go into the disc space, decreasing the pressure on the disc.

Decreasing the pressure on the disc helps with the overall healing process and to reduce the bulge or slip. If the patient suffers with sciatica, or referred pain into the shoulders, arms or hands if the slip is located in the neck, the nerves become free to move again without compression – which in many cases provides immediate relief of pain.

An osteopath monitors you throughout, and the first session on the machine is only around 10 minutes, though this is increased on consecutive visits.

The clinic offers comprehensive aftercare, with plenty of follow-up contact and also an app containing exercises for you to do at home to support your back pain treatment plan.

Feeling taller and lighter with no pain

As I stood up afterwards, a lot of my normal aches and pains had gone, even the ones I’d lived with for years. I felt taller and more upright.

On my way home from the clinic I felt as if I was walking differently, with a more fluid stride. I could also keep my posture upright with little to no effort. The pressure I’d previously felt in my spine had much improved and I felt lighter, which lasted a few days.

I would certainly recommend IDD therapy for anyone who has struggled with back pain for a long time. A course of treatments would definitely lead to long-lasting results.

IDD Therapy at the Mayfair Clinic, London, costs £250 for initial consultation, including an X-Ray at a Harley St Clinic, if required. Follow-up appointments are £150 and packages are offered.
The clinic is currently running an offer of 52 per cent off initial consultation, making it £120, including treatment.
