Hydro heaven: Ragdale Hall, Melton Mowbray
Despite walking into an atmosphere of sophistication at Ragdale Hall, with its grand 17th century architecture and an A list-worthy welcome, it didn’t take long for my partner and I to turn into giggling teenagers.
Essentially a water park for grown ups, this dedicated hydro spa seems to bring out the playfulness of all its visitors – whether that’s the older couple I spotted splashing each other under the waterfall, or the hen party in fits of giggles trying a hula hooping class.
Activities a-plenty
It’s fair to say that Ragdale has recreation covered, whatever you’re into. Fancy guided walks through rolling countryside? One-to-one sessions in the aqua gym? Lush lunches containing nutrient-packed food? You can be as active or inactive – or as virtuous or indulgent – as you like!
We spent plenty of time in the Thermal Spa, which features 12 different heat and water experiences – my favourite being the candle room, a silent flotation room with different pods to relax in whilst listening to calming music by flickering candle light. Switching on the ‘freezing mist’ setting on the multi-sensory showers while my partner was enjoying the hot ‘tropical rain’ setting was another highlight, although it did earn me a handful of crushed ice down the back of my swimsuit.
My fitness highlight was trying out the BEAMing (Balance Engage Align and Movement) class, an invigorating core-based workout done on a 5ft long, 6in wide foam cushion.
Fire on all cylinders
As well as rebooting your body, you can also boost your brain. The Mind Gym – the first of its kind I’ve seen at a health retreat – contained concentration and calmness tests, physical puzzles, space age toys and plenty of books and board games (including Scrabble of course), which kept us challenged and full of competitive banter for hours.
Immersed in the Infinity Pool
Now, on to the main purpose of our visit, which was to check out the brand new Rooftop Infinity Pool – the resort’s sixth pool, heated to a lovely 35C. We enjoyed watching the winter sun setting whilst reclining on the underwater massage jet heating, admiring the beauty of the countryside view.
Feeling pretty pampered
When we weren’t immersed in water, there was of course, the luxurious spa experience. The Blissful Face and Back Therapy included a whole body massage with lavender and tea tree oil to reduce any tension. It was followed by a facial and uses The Spa Find range, which is paraben-free, and contains healing ingredients from the Dead Sea to unblock pores and hydrate skin. It’s fair to say we left feeling fresh-faced, fulfilled, and full of fun memories.
