We’ll drink to that: Bone-boosting egg nog
Keep essential minerals topped up with this classic party drink. With fewer hours of sunlight at this time of year, it can be trickier to get enough of the vital micronutrients your bones need to stay strong. This traditional festive tipple is the perfect solution to get the nutrient combo your bones need.
Bone-boosting egg nog
Whiz up 490ml whole milk, 3 egg yolks, 1/2 tsp Stevia, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, and 1/2 tsp cinnamon,in a blender until smooth, then pour into a pan with a vanilla pod and warm over a low heat for around 10 mins, not letting the liquid boil. Drink straight away after dusting with a little more nutmeg, or chill in the fridge. Add a splash of brandy or cream if you’re feeling indulgent!
Milk
A well known source of calcium, a mineral that helps rebuild bone cells. Whole milk is higher in K2, a lesser-known vitamin that’s essential for transporting calcium into bones.
Eggs
Yolks are one of the best dietary sources of vitamin D – which usually comes from sunlight – the eggs in this drink will provide 30 per cent of your daily needs. Your body needs this vitamin to help utilise calcium and this combination is great for your bones.
Stevia
A plant-based sweetener, that may help to increase the absorption of calcium in your body, according to a Japanese study.
Cinnamon and nutmeg
Good sources of manganese – an essential mineral for helping bones regenerate.
