Cold-pressed hemp oil is extremely beneficial for skin health thanks to its super emollient qualities.
Hemp oil is incredibly nourishing for skin on many levels. It plumps, firms and tightens your skin’s appearance. It also provides powerful antioxidant activity to help promote beautiful skin.
Where does hemp oil come from?
Hemp oil is pressed from hemp seeds and it is rarely refined. The oil is a clear green colour and has a nutty flavour which varies in intensity depending on the harvest.
Although it comes from the cannabis sativa plant, it does not contain any THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which are the psychoactive components of the plant.
Skin benefits of hemp oil
Excellent skin emollient
In addition to consuming the oil, or taking capsules as a dietary supplement, you can apply it on your skin too.
Hemp oil is a super emollient (highly moisturising), which does not clog the pores.
It is helpful in moisturising skin, and balancing out oily skin by providing hydration and thus regulating the sebum-producing glands.
It comes as no surprise that it is recommended for acne sufferers, in the cases where acne is caused by over production of sebum.
Powerful anti-inflammatory
Hemp is one of very few natural oils which has a perfect balance of omega oils in a ratio that contributes to optimum absorption.
The gamma-linoleic acid GLA contained in hemp oil acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory which aids skin cell regeneration and encourages healthy skin growth.
This makes hemp particularly suitable for inflamed and irritated skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and acne.
Anti-ageing
Hemp seed oil is rich in antioxidants (such as vitamin E), carotene (precursor to vitamin A), phytosterols and phospholipids.
It also contains a number of minerals. These include calcium, magnesium, sulphur, potassium and phosphorus, along with modest amounts of iron and zinc.
Hemp oil contains Omega 3 and 6, which are essential fatty acids that encourage collagen production. Collagen in turns leads to reduced fine lines and wrinkles and delaying the signs of ageing.
All in all, another fabulous plant-derived skin care ingredient!
Discover the Handmade Naturals range
We don’t offer the pure hemp oil on its own as it is a somewhat fragile oil with a relatively short shelf life.
We do however use it in two formulations in our skin care range – the Hemp, Rose & Jojoba Facial Cleanser and the Organic Shea & Hemp Balm which is a versatile, multi-tasking balm suitable for face cleansing and moisturising for all skin type, including sensitive skin.
If you like to use soap – two of our soaps also contain hemp oil – the Hemp & Patchouli Hair & Body Bar and Juniper & Avocado Hair & Body Bar.
You can add hemp oil to face masks or apply the neat oil to your skin as needed.
