Warmer weather can leave you tossing and turning – and if you’ve got a lumpy, unsupportive mattress, this can make your night’s sleep even worse. Here’s why a supportive mattress really matters…
It’s not often that we associate laying down with being healthier, but considering you spend a good portion of your life asleep, it’s important to get your sleep setting right. So how much does your mattress, matter?
Well, sleep uncomfortably and you’ll not only wake up achy, but the sleep deprivation you’ll have from tossing and turning can affect your cognitive performance too, according to new studies.
A proper mattress – as in one that’s supportive, breathable, and contours to all the right places – can therefore make all the difference. This is particularly important in the summer, when your sleep tends to be lighter thanks to fewer hours of darkness, and because women overheat more due to hormones.
However, if you’ve got friends or family who swear by either hard, or soft, or whatever combination of coils, foam or cushioning, investing in a good mattresses can be a daunting prospect. Not to mention the fact that you might have completely different needs to your partner!
Some proper support
Cue SIMBA, a sleep science company who’ve taken the hard work out of it with their mattress, which could ‘support a hippo on one side and a mouse on the other!’ apparently (other more favourable comparisons apply!). ‘Our data, taken from 10 million people, shows that you don’t need to worry about whether the bed is hard or soft, what matters is creating something that responds to the needs of the individual,’ says co-founder James Cox.
And their mattress does just that. With a combination of technology, including special memory foam and 2,500 patented conical springs, which move horizontally and vertically to fit the shape of your body, it guarantees a super comfy sleep, every night, for all those in the bed!
Having received delivery of a mattress myself – order online by 2 pm and it’s with you by the next day, neatly vacuum-packed in a box and so easy to set up – I can confirm it’s really worth it. I’ve only ever had hand-me-down mattresses in the past, but now I’ve seen the light – or rather the dark! Myself – with a herniated disc, my partner, who is almost twice my size and has bad knees, and – yes I’ll admit it – my dog, who has arthritis, all now sleep well through the night. It’s so comfy I now enjoy reading in bed, and weekend lie ins again. The only problem is having to leave it in the morning!
- Simba Sleep comes in a variety of sizes including – single £399, small double or double £599, king £699, super king £799 and emperor £899. Each mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial promise and a 10-year guarantee.
Slip into sleep
No matter how comfy you are, if your mind’s abuzz, it’s harder to get to sleep. So, SIMBA’s resident psychologist and mindfulness expert Hope Bastine has put together the following guided meditation to help relax your mind and prepare your body for sleep: https://simbasleep.com/pages/bringing-sleep-to-ibiza
