All skin types stand to benefit from a little CBD, particularly those with acne or eczema, says our CBD expert in the know, Ruby Deevoy. Discover the benefits of CBD skincare, plus the best products on the market…
The remarkable possibilities of CBD in skincare are something I’ve experienced first-hand. I’d had acne since I was 12 and by the time I turned 30, I’d tried everything to cure it: the pill, antibiotics, dietary changes, Sudocrem – you name it. Nothing worked, and at times it really took a toll on my mental health. But CBD changed all that.
Three months after I started using a CBD face oil, B Natural Face Oil (£22.50) specifically, I stopped getting breakouts. Even the monthly flare-ups disappeared. It honestly felt like a miracle!
Skin conditions are very common, yet the reality of how difficult it can be to live with one is rarely talked about. Let me assure you that CBD can be transformative.
I’ve helped lots of people with various skin types and conditions try out different CBD skincare products. Even those with the most sensitive skin had no problem with it. And none of the trials have indicated adverse effects either.
How does CBD help your skin?
There are endocannabinoid receptors in every layer of the skin, in almost every skin cell, of the human body. This makes a fully functioning endocannabinoid system (ECS), with which phytocannabinoids from the cannabis plant interact, a vital part of maintaining good skin health.
When the ECS is activated by your naturally produced endocannabinoids or phytocannabinoids, something called ‘endocannabinoid tone’ is created. This helps regulate the normal function of the waterproof skin barrier – your first defence against microbes, UV rays, free radicals and pollution.
When not functioning as it should, which can occur due to stress, lack of sleep or poor diet, among other things, you can expect to see inflammation, dryness, visible signs of ageing, a sebum imbalance, itching and more uncomfortable symptoms synonymous with skin issues.
Cannabinoids, such as CBD, support the ECS in its healthy function, which keeps everything – your skin’s appearance included – in perfect balance.
Does CBD help with acne or eczema?
There are a number of studies indicating amazing therapeutic potential for acne and eczema, with findings suggesting that CBD helps normalise excessive sebum production and assist with the turnover of new skin cells, while reducing the effects of free-radical damage and many other processes.
As I discovered, using a topical CBD product can effectively target problem areas and start easing inflammation, redness, swelling and irritation right away.
But with prolonged use, the affects of CBD go deeper, working with keratinocytes (cells found in the epidermis), mast cells and melanocytes (melanin-producing cells, responsible for skin colour) in the layers of the skin to produce anti-inflammatory effects and much, much more. Studies show CBD helps normalise excessive sebum production.
Does hemp oil help your skin?
CBD and hemp seed oil work in completely different ways, but both are brilliant skincare ingredients.
Although hemp seed oil contains no cannabinoids, it does contain all 21 amino acids, a perfect omega-3:6 ratio, and vitamin E, carotene, phytosterols, phospholipids, sulphur, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc! The oil won’t clog your pores and it makes a great base for CBD skincare.
